![]() ![]() You can be pretty sure that a company bragging about using no treats does not use desensitization/counter conditioning as a training technique. Especially given the tools above, whose main functions are to startle and scare. But then in the first bullet point, it says that dogs who bark at “birds, dogs, people, falling leaves, or clouds” are “nuisance barkers.” How very sad for the dogs who are scared of any of those things and are barking out of fear. The flyer starts out all right, saying that barking can be a sign the dog is stressed. But what I’m most interested in is the mixture of information and mythology about barking in the flyer. The preceding was a little overview of what we can glean about their methods. The air horns were purchased by Bark Busters’ clients on the advice of Bark Busters’ trainers, and the penny cans were created by the clients on their advice. The disc-shaped things (throwing bags) and the spray bottle have Bark Busters’ logo on them and appear to be provided by the company. The items in the photo above were all collected by a trainer friend who was called to help families who had previously hired Bark Busters. ![]() This is another red flag, the idea that a particular word or sound has some intrinsic magical power to communicate. Bark Busters also teaches a special growly way to yell at one’s dog, using the word “Bah!”. Airhorns, spray bottles, penny cans, and special bags with chains in them to throw. They aren’t tools that help create a lasting emotional bond with a happy lifelong buddy after all. So don’t be surprised at the tools this franchise teaches people to use. And of course the company is the one defining what constitutes “harsh” punishment.
![]() ![]() ![]() These unbreakable, master-crafted blades forged by a lost art in the hands of dangerous men who have mastered the sword came to attain a powerful aura of mystique and prestige. Over time, Power-wrought swords ended in the hands of the elite swordsmen, noblemen, and kings the swords carried by king of Malkier (Lan Mandaragon's sword) and the king of Cairhien (Laman Damodred's sword) were Power-wrought. When Aes Sedai started taking Oaths and vowed never to create weapons, these Power-wrought swords became rarer and rarer. They never rust, and they never need sharpening. ![]() They are not damaged by ordinary weapons. Power-wrought swords gave their users an advantage in battle. However, certain types of blades are favored among blademasters and ordinary swordsmen alike.ĭuring the Age of Legends when Aes Sedai forged weapons with the Power, some of them were swords. Since the blademaster, and not the blade, is the weapon, he should be able to effectively use his sword forms with any given blade. Regional areas may favor one particular shape over another. Sword of a BlademasterĪlthough the size and shape of the blades used may vary, the swords used by blademasters most often have a single edge, curved for slashing, with a hilt. Thus each of Rand's hands are branded with the Heron Mark, fulfilling the prophecy from the Karaethon Cycle. This melted Tam's heron marked sword (even though it was Power-wrought) and branded the heron mark in his other palm (the blade was held in reverse). Later, in the battle with Ba'alzamon over the skies of Falme, Rand channeled saidin through his sword as he struck the final blow to Ba'alzamon with Heron Wading in the Rushes. While holding his sword Ba'alzamon heats the sword, thus branding a heron onto one of his palms. Rand al'Thor is confronted by Ba'alzamon while hunting for the Horn of Valere. Heron-mark swords may contain the heron on the blade, on the hilt, or on both. Only men who have complete mastery of the sword are given the privilege of carrying a heron-mark sword. Rand's heron-marked palm, by Todd Cameron HamiltonĪ blademaster may decorate their sword with a heron mark although it is not demanded of them. Practitioners typically used bundled lathes of wood (resembling the real-world shinai) while drilling against sparring partners.īlademasters are formally recognized as such in the Westlands when one of two things occurs: either they defeat a known blademaster in a single combat with appropriate witnesses, or they are judged by five blademasters, via unanimous vote, to have demonstrated sufficient skill. These forms are thought to be an adaptation of the game, "swords" which was played in the Age of Legends. Students are taught named choreographies known as forms, such as Parting the Silk. Others are taught by a mentor, for example Rand al'Thor was taught by Lan Mandragoran. These young men were the traditional pool from which Aes Sedai recruited their Gaidin. Suppose you had the following text to wish you want to add the in-line code: Snippit on slack code#To add in-line code to your Slack message, you have two options again: Either add the code to one word or one line or to blocks of text. Posting in-line is a good way to post a code block or snippet (or to add color to a text!) to make it more interactive and eye-catching. This is slightly more complicated than adding basic level formatting like italics or bold to your message. *Attention, guys!* Zoe is stuck in traffic with the brand manager, so *the meeting will begin at 2 PM in the boardroom.*Īfter pressing Enter, the message will look something like this:Įxample #2: Adding in-Line Code to Your Message In your Slack message box, you’ll type the message as follows: Suppose you want to type the following message:Īttention, guys! Zoe is stuck in traffic with the brand manager, so the meeting will begin at 2 PM in the boardroom. Since we’re only concerned with using the markdown formatting, we’ll be adding symbols around our text. You have two ways to add bold formatting to a text other than using the formatting toolbar: Either use the keyboard shortcut to format the selected text or surround your text with specific symbols associated with every format. This is to communicate urgency to the reader or highlight the most important part of the message. We often use bold formatting when we want to emphasize a specific part of our message. Let’s explain how Slack markdown works with the help of two examples: Example #1: Making a Specific Part of Your Text Bold So yes, you can add formatting to Slack messages through keyboard commands. Precisely the markdown formatting in Slack is better suitable for users with technical proficiency or who prefer working with keyboard buttons. Slack allows you to work with a form of markdown formatting that enables you to complete more complex tweaks through one of the oldest methods of text formatting on the internet, but there’s still a learning curve that you have to overcome. All these three platforms use different flavors of markdown similar to Slack’s. You’ve already encountered markdown if you have an account on Facebook Messenger, Skype, and Reddit. You can use Slack markdown to add more structure and form to your message by giving it a visual hierarchy that not only promotes readability but makes the message clearer too. In November 2019, Slack updated its message box with a WYSIWYG interface, which simplifies adding bold, italics, and other features to the text you type. Think of it like squares and rectangles: All markdown is a type of markup, but not all markup is specifically markdown. Markup is general changes in text formatting, while markdown is a specific syntax for that formatting. The latter uses rich text that is later converted to proper HTML.Īlso, note that markdown and markup are not quite the same, though they often get used interchangeably. Think of markdown as the alternative to What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG) editors. The aim here is to make sure that plain text documents become more readable without tags messing up the text, as well as providing text modifiers like bolding, italics, lists, and so on. Markdown is a plain-text formatting syntax that was designed to make writing for the internet easier. What is Slack Markdown Anyway?īefore jumping into anything Slack-related, let’s understand what we mean by markdown, plain and simple. ![]() Read on as we discuss markup formatting in Slack in greater detail. If you don’t know where to start when adding formatting to your messages or are keen to learn more about Slack markdown, we’ve got you. It displays the extreme prejudice towards women, the strong Kaede struggling to be accepted as her father’s heir and having to pass up being known as the heroine of a part of the plot that cannot be told here if the plot isn’t to be spoiled. It shows why political alliances were important, but family more so, and how devastating the wrong choice could be. The story has it all, the keen warrior, mystery and magic, adventure, political issues concerning leadership, and a sweeping romance. For fantasy this may be, but the Japanese historical aspects are rather factual. Hearn never shies away from descriptions of torture and death, and scenes of a sexual nature are relayed in their historical truthfulness. The plot switches between them, Takeo’s chapters being written in the first person, and Kaede’s in the third. They are very much a product of their writing time, written before Young Adult books became what they are today, and are all the better for it. However apart from this the characters are exceptional. All I felt was that he was disrespecting Kaede and their supposed love. For this reason I had a lot of trouble accepting the romance in the book whereas the first time I read it I thought it was amazingly romantic. ![]() The character actually appears to be a closet bisexual, but this isn’t the point, rather the point is that the romantic storyline revolves around an intensely passionate love and then a moment later the hero will go and sleep with someone else. The talents are supernatural, but they aren’t over the top, they are in the main the sorts of talents that we often think might be possible to develop, such as acute hearing.īut something that I didn’t notice the first time I read the book, due to my age, was the main character’s sexual promiscuity. The main characters are strong, the heroine especially, and the reader is able to get to know them well in a reasonably short period of time. The book is a brilliant example of Young Adult Asian historical fiction (albeit written by a white westerner), and it takes the reader to various different locations without any big changes in plot. But reading it again I can see the flaws I didn’t see then. Because of my reading speed at the time, the climax took me 45 minutes to get through and along with the historic subject I was in heaven. I first read this book around its publication date and absolutely loved it, I remember staying up all night to finish it through this I came to discover how fantastic February mornings are as the sun rises, something I try to be awake to experience at least once a year to this day. Takeo’s not sure what’s happening but he knows that with these talents he may be able to defeat the tyrant. The Deprivation View says, seemingly plausibly, that it is bad not only to feel pain but also to lose out on, or be deprived of, pleasures. We can ask, when is death bad for the one who dies? Epicureans, holding that death brings to an end all feelings, awareness, thought, and existence itself, say it’s never bad. Together these comprise about a third of the book. I’ll come back later to what we might make of this, but meanwhile, and to give that later comment some support, I’ll say more about first, Chapter 1 and second, the thematically linked Chapters 7 and 8. ![]() But elsewhere, Kamm’s interlocuters, or hapless victims of her unyielding analysis, are mostly public figures-Atul Gawande and Neil Gorsuch as well as Emmanuel-who, as might be expected, are ill-equipped, either by training, inclination, or career demands, to withstand it. Some of Shelley Kagan’s arguments from his book Death are the main focus of Chapter 2 and David Velleman makes a more than passing appearance in Chapter 7. Kamm’s own views here are not easy to discern. The last chapter, in a pronounced contrast, interrogates in painstaking detail the views on physician assisted suicide and euthanasia put forth at various times by ‘a major figure in US health policy’ (ix), oncologist and bioethicist Ezekiel Emmanuel. Synonym for outset professional#References here are mostly to professional philosophers of some stature. ![]() In the first chapter Kamm addresses her questions directly, and with really very little call on other voices. Not only does the book run from the general to the particular, or from philosophy in its purer to its more practical and applied form-which accordingly is mixed here with law, politics, and current affairs-but it shifts from the pretty much free-standing to discussions increasingly dependent on input from elsewhere. A middle chapter-think of it somewhat like a sorbet or palate cleanser in a long and heavy meal-attends in particular to the ageing process and invites speculation (the prompt here is Scott Fitzgeralds’s Benjamin Buttons) about its being reversed. Synonym for outset how to#Intermediate chapters are concerned, inter alia, with how death affects meaning, end of life care and how to plan for it, and to what extent we should try to stave off the inevitable. It begins with some broad and long-standing questions about the badness of death and ends, with asking what the state-and here Kamm has in mind just the US state-should require, permit, or forbid regarding suicide and euthanasia. So then it is neither a collection of extant writings nor a wholly new work, but something in between, dealing, in a loosely structured fashion, with various issues relating to death and dying. Kamm’s latest book is a semi-compilation-eight chapters, almost all of which are, to different degrees, refashionings of earlier materials.
